We use research-based methods to provide a comprehensive assessment.
Understanding Autism
If you suspect your child may have autism, it’s vital to get an accurate diagnosis. The correct diagnosis will help your child get access to the care and therapies they need, which are typically covered by insurance. At Total Spectrum, we offer diagnostic evaluations that involve a comprehensive process of interviews, observations, and assessments from both parents and specialists.
Our focus lies in early intervention. Our skilled psychologists conduct evaluations that begin with a clinical interview to discuss your child’s medical and developmental history. Then, we conduct a thorough evaluation of your child’s cognitive, language, motor, social, and adaptive skills. Once the evaluation is complete, we’ll schedule a follow-up meeting to discuss the results and provide you with a comprehensive report that includes any relevant diagnoses and treatment recommendations.
At Total Spectrum, we’re committed to early intervention and providing the highest quality care for your child.
Recognizing the Signs of Autism
Autism can be challenging to diagnose because it has many symptoms, but you can be aware of early signs. During your child’s development, you may notice whether your child is meeting typical milestones. In the first five years of life, children experience speedy growth as they learn how to walk, talk, and interact with their surroundings. Trust your observations — because you know your child best. If your child is not reaching their milestones, note what you’re observing and bring up any concerns to your pediatrician. Let your provider know if you notice symptoms of autism.

The symptoms of autism can include:
- Not smiling at others by six months
- Not pointing or gesturing to communicate by 12 months
- Not babbling or jabbering by 12 months
- Not speaking single words by 16 months
- Not speaking two-word phrases by 24 months
- Not reacting to voices, sounds, or their name
When You Get an Autism Diagnosis
If you see early signs of autism or your gut tells you something’s off, talk to your child’s pediatrician.
While there’s no medical or blood test to diagnose autism, your provider can start by ruling out medical issues like hearing or speech problems. If your doctor suspects autism, you’ll be referred to a diagnostician who specializes in autism. This could be a clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, developmental pediatrician, or pediatric neurologist.
